As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties, they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them.

In the bleachers at Chicago's Wrigley Field, die hard Cub fans root for their team. The group includes a rabid cheerleader, a blind man who follows the game by transistor radio and does his own play by play, a bathing beauty, a nerd and various other bleacher denizens. As the game proceeds, they bet among themselves on every conceivable event, go out for frosty malts or beers, try to pick up the bathing beauty and, occasionally, watch the game. The Cubs inevitably blow it in the ninth and the villainous Marvin, who always bets against the Cubs figuring he can't lose, cleans up. The bleacher bums remain undaunted they will be back tomorrow to root for the home team.

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her cap for Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.

The planted beans grow into a huge beanstalk reaching far into the clouds and into the realm of a giant who had kidnapped Jack's father. Despite his mother's pleadings, Jack climbs up the beanstalk and helps his father to escape from the giant, who ends up not being as mean as everyone thought.
